Almonds are the most widely grown and eaten nuts worldwide, though it is officially not nuts but drupes. The are the kernels of the almond fruit and have a hard shell, similar to the kernels of cherries, plums and olives. Almond fruit grows at the almond (Prunus dulcis), those originating in southern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. The trees are 4 to 10 metres high and attracting a lot of insects during their exuberant bloom.
Archaeological finds have shown that almonds already were eaten from 2000 to 3000 BC. Raw almonds are very nutritious and rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium. They also contain many proteins, about 20 g per 100 g, and that is almost equal to meat or yoghurt!
Almonds can be eaten as a snack, or be added to a salad or nut cake. But you can also almonds ground into a flour where you can make delicious biscuits, pancakes or even almond milk out of it.
