Malonic acid (1,3-propanedioic acid) is a white crystalline compound. Diesters of malonic acid, called malonates, are often used for condensation reactions. The name malonic acid comes from the Latin word for apple (malus). Malonic acid occurs in the oxidation of malic acid.
