Almonds - Stone fruits with pit.
Almonds are the most cultivated and eaten nuts worldwide, although they are not officially nuts, but stone fruits. They are the kernels of the almond fruit and have a hard shell, comparable to the kernels of cherries, plums and olives. Almond fruits grow on the almond tree (Prunus dulcis), which is native to Southern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. The trees grow 4 to 10 meters high and attract a huge number of insects during their exuberant flowering.
Archaeological finds have shown that almonds were already eaten 2000 to 3000 BC. Raw almonds are very nutritious and rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium. They also contain a lot of protein, about 20 grams per 100 grams, which is almost equal to meat or yoghurt!
Almonds are great as a snack, or added to a salad or nut cake. But you can also grind almonds into a flour that you can use to make delicious cookies, pancakes or even almond milk.
