The Ferment Company BioStarter Water Kefir 3x 5gr Sachets

Waterkefir is easy to make with our kefirstarter! This makes you a bubbly and refreshing drink, which is completely dairy-free.

What you need:

  • 1 sachet of water kefir starter bio ferment
  • 1 liter of water at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons of cane sugar (Do not use coconut sugar, maple syrup or honey, as these can inhibit the growth of the kefir bacteria)
  • 2 figs
  • 1 jar, or 1 glass jar covered with filter paper and a rubber band or elastic
  • 1 scoop of plastic, wood or stainless steel

Making waterefir for the first time:

  • Take a large container and dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar in 1 liter of water at room temperature. Make sure the pot is not completely full because the volume may increase during the fermentation process.
  • Add 1 sachet of water starter and stir gently with a spoon until the powder is completely dissolved.
  • Add 2 dried organic figs.
  • Close the lid of the jar or cover the glass jar with a coffee filter and fix it with an elastic. Leave it at room temperature for a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 48 hours so that it can ferment.
  • After 24-48 hours the waterfir is ready! You can drink it like that. In the refrigerator you can keep it for 2 weeks in a closed or covered pot. Keep 1 small cup of waterfir (200ml) to make a pot of waterefir again.

Making waterefir again:

  • Take a large container and dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar in 1 liter of water at room temperature. Make sure the pot is not completely full because the volume may increase during the fermentation process.
  • Add a small cup (200ml) of the previously made waterefir and stir well through the water. The best results are obtained with waterfir that has not been stored in the refrigerator for more than 2 days.
  • Add 2 dried organic figs.
  • Close the lid of the jar or cover the glass jar with a coffee filter and fix it with an elastic. Let it stand for 24-48 hours at room temperature so that it can ferment.
  • After 24-48 hours the waterfir is ready! You can drink it like that. In the refrigerator you can keep it for 2 weeks in a closed or covered pot. Keep 1 small cup of waterfir (200ml) to make a pot of waterefir again.


How do you know if the waterefir is ready:

Depending on the temperature of the room where you allow the water ferment to ferment, the water effluent will be ready after 24 to 48 hours. The best way to find out is to taste it and see if you like it. Some people like the sweeter taste of water kefir that is fermented for 24 hours, while others prefer the kefir's sharp taste that has been fermented for 48 hours.

If it is very warm, the kefir can be ready even faster. Check your water krefir after 12 hours and if it tastes good you can stop fermenting and put the kefir in the fridge.

TIP! Open the container carefully. During the fermentation process, the kefir bacteria produce a carbonated drink. The better the pot is closed, the more carbon dioxide is produced. Open the pot carefully when the waterfir is ready because the waterfir can foam because of accumulated pressure that is released.

Does the powder also become kefir grains, or does it stay as a powder?

The starters of The Ferment Company remain powder and do not become grains.

However, you can ferment with the powders. Not unlimited as with grains, but at least 10 times with kefir and yoghurt and at least 9 times with water kefir. The advantage of the powders in sachets is that you do not have to feed and care / wash / sieve and that you can easily alternate with various types of (vegetable) milk and juices.
